A Christian Woman’s Guide to Starting Therapy
If you’ve ever sat in church, journal open, Bible highlighted, and still felt like something heavy was living inside your chest, this is for you.
You’ve prayed. You’ve fasted. You’ve shown up to every Bible study and quoted every verse about peace. And yet the anxiety is still there. The overwhelm is still there. The sadness you can’t quite name is still there.
First, I want you to know: that doesn’t mean your faith isn’t enough. It means you’re human. And healing, real, deep, lasting healing, is something God designed for you. All of you. Including the parts that might need a little extra support.
So let’s talk about therapy. What it is, what it isn’t, and why seeking it might just be one of the most faithful things you ever do.
The Lie That Keeps So Many Christian Women Stuck
“If I just had more faith, I wouldn’t struggle like this.”
Sound familiar? This is one of the most common things I hear from Christian women before they finally come to therapy, and it breaks my heart every time. Because it’s simply not true.
Faith and mental health support are not in opposition. They never were. Jesus healed people, physically, emotionally, spiritually. He sat with the grieving. He met people in their darkest moments. He didn’t tell them to just pray harder.
Therapy is one of the tools He’s placed in this world for your healing. Using it isn’t weakness. It’s wisdom.
What Therapy Actually Looks Like (Spoiler: It’s Not Scary)
I think a lot of women picture therapy as lying on a couch while someone analyzes your childhood for an hour. That’s not it, at least not here.
At Clear Mind Therapy & EMDR, sessions with Abi feel more like a safe conversation with someone who actually gets it. We talk about what’s going on in your life right now. We explore patterns. We process the things that have been weighing on you, sometimes for years. We analyze the negative belief patterns that the devil has you trapped in.
I also specialize in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which is a research-backed therapy that helps your brain process painful memories and experiences that might be stuck. It’s gentle, effective, and doesn’t require you to retell traumatic stories over and over again. With over 40 years of research it has be scientifically proven time and time again to be effective.
Let me share that I myself started therapy first as a client. I was dysregulated, emotional, irrational, and not a good wife. I was in talk therapy for 3 years and had seen no growth. Then, God led me to an EMDR therapist who used that therapy to change my life.
You get to show up exactly as you are. Faith, questions, mess and all.
You Don’t Have to Be in Crisis to Come to Therapy
One of the biggest myths about therapy is that you have to “be bad enough” to need it. Like there’s some threshold of brokenness you have to hit first.
You don’t.
You can come to therapy because you’re exhausted from trying to hold everything together. Because you want to understand yourself better. Because your relationships feel hard and you want to show up differently. Because something happened years ago that you’ve never fully processed. Because you just feel off and you can’t explain why.
All of that is enough. You are enough of a reason.
What to Expect When You Start
Starting therapy can feel vulnerable. Here’s what the process looks like at Clear Mind Therapy & EMDR so you know exactly what you’re walking into:
1. Reach out. You can contact us through our website CLICK HERE, txt/call 832-448-2250, or message on social media. I offer virtual sessions across Texas and in-person sessions in The Woodlands and Spring area.
2. We connect. Your first session is all about getting to know you, your story, what’s brought you here, and what you’re hoping for.
3. We make a plan. Together, we’ll figure out what kind of support will help you most. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach here.
4. We do the work, gently. Healing takes time, and that’s okay. We go at your pace. I encourage my clients to really commit to this journey. Healing will not happen in four sessions like insurance wants it to. That is one of the reasons I am cash pay only. We are not held to the restraints of insurance. I encourage you to stick with me and let’s see what God can do through clinical interventions.
A Note for the Woman Who Is Still on the Fence
Maybe you’ve been thinking about this for a while. Maybe you’ve opened this page and closed it three times. Maybe you told yourself you’d pray about it more and then do it , but “later” keeps getting pushed.
I see you. I really do.
Starting is the hardest part. But I truly believe that the courage it takes to ask for help is a form of faith in itself. It’s saying: I believe things can be different. I believe I’m worth fighting for. I believe God has more for me than this.
He does. And you are.
