What Is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help you heal from trauma, anxiety, and distressing life experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR works by engaging both sides of your brain simultaneously, allowing you to process painful memories without having to relive them in detail. It’s recognized by the American Psychological Association, the World Health Organization, and the Department of Veterans Affairs as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD.
How Does EMDR Work?
At the core of EMDR is something called bilateral stimulation, a gentle, rhythmic engagement of the left and right sides of your brain. This mirrors what your brain naturally does during REM sleep, the phase when your mind processes and files away the events of your day. When trauma occurs, memories can get “stuck” in the nervous system, stored with all the original emotions, physical sensations, and beliefs attached to them. Bilateral stimulation helps your brain finally do what it couldn’t do on its own, process those stuck memories and move them to a place where they no longer hold power over you.
Tactile EMDR: Healing Through Your Hands
At Clear Mind Therapy, sessions use tactile EMDR with handheld buzzers, small devices held in each hand that gently alternate vibrations from left to right. Many clients find this approach more comfortable and grounding than eye movements, particularly those who are highly sensitive, struggle with eye contact, or simply prefer a more physical, body-centered experience. The buzzers are discreet, calming, and allow you to stay present and in control throughout the process.
What Can EMDR Help With?
EMDR is highly effective for a wide range of challenges, including:
- Trauma and PTSD
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Childhood abuse or neglect
- Grief and loss
- Low self-worth and negative core beliefs
- Phobias and fears
- Depression rooted in past experiences
What Can I Expect in an EMDR Session?
You don’t need to describe your trauma in detail for EMDR to work. Sessions with Abi begin with building a strong foundation of safety and trust. Together, you’ll identify the memories or beliefs that are holding you back. Then, while holding the buzzers, you’ll be guided through sets of bilateral stimulation as your brain begins to naturally process and reframe those experiences. Many clients describe feeling a sense of release, clarity, or lightness that they haven’t felt in years, sometimes after just a few sessions.
